Blog SEO is what separates the men from the boys.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which Wikipedia defines as “the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.” To beat a dead horse, blog SEO is the process of getting your blog more traffic, which means more viewers. More viewers generally means more money, and money is a pretty good reason to focus on blog SEO. So, now that I have your attention, lets focus on the first step of blog SEO, finding effective keywords for your content.
Using Google Keywords Tool to Optimize Blog Post
Before writing the title or content of any blog post, you will want to do your keyword research first with the Google Keywords Tool
, found here. Make sure you have a gmail account and login because you will get extra blog SEO features using the Google keywords tool and more data to work with. Uncheck the “Broad” checkbox and enable the “Exact” and “Phrase” boxes under the Match Types sidebar panel. Since you probably already have an idea what your blog post is going to be about, start typing out keywords and keyword phrases that will apply to your blog post. Click “Search” and also click the tab labeled “Keyword Ideas” instead of “Ad group Ideas”. Browse through the list of ideas and try to find keyword phrases that are “Low in Competition” (mouse over the competition rank, you will want competition level below a .10) and get a decent amount of “Global Monthly Searches” (2000-50,000). You will be able to add filters to your search using the “Advanced Options and Filters” feature, which I think you have to be logged in to use.
Finding a keyword (or keyword phrase) in this range is easy, but finding one that fits exactly with what you will be talking about in your blog post is crucial for blog SEO. It is much better to get even one or two people that come to your blog post and LOVE what you have to say than 1200 coming to find out that your post has nothing to do with what they were originally looking for. Google will pick up on this trend if you are getting a very high bounce rate, and this will hurt you in the long run and can actually lower your blog SEO. Try to only pick 3 keywords or keyword phrases, because the more keywords you have, the less relevant that keyword will be in the eyes of Google.
Crafting an Effective Blog Post Title = Good Blog SEO
Hopefully, you found a few keywords and keyword phrases, and now we can begin on step 2 of this blog SEO tutorial. Creating a good blog post title will help tremendously with blog SEO, because the title of the page will be shown in the google search results, so we want it to be revalant to the content of our blog post. That is why we needed to do our keyword research first, because it is a must to use those keywords in the title if we want any chance of showing up on a search engine. Pick your favorite keyword, or keyword phrase, and think of that as the “Focus Keyword”. For effective blog SEO, you want to have this focus keyword, or keyword phrase at the beginning of your title.
In this example, my focus keyword should be “Optimize” even though that is a absolutely TERRIBLE keyword for this specific post. It is terrible because it isn’t descriptive enough. A better choice might be “Blog SEO”… which now that I think about it… I’m going to go with that, and get rid of the “Optimize” keyword all together. Sorry for the confusion…
After you have posted the focus keyword or keyword phrase from the Google keywords tool research we did earlier, try to add your other keywords you found in the title if you can. Again, for this example, I have the keywords “Blog SEO” as my focus, “SEO tutorial” and “Google Keywords Tool” as my other two keywords. For blog SEO, you want to make sure your title is less than 70 characters total.
